Default Can I develop this in java?

I work as a civil engineer but I know something about of java and other programming languages. I need to develop a web site to compute stability computations on simple 2D shapes. One of the things my users have to do is draw a shape (polygon) and indicate the forces acting upon it. This will require some drawing tools. One the user is done with the modeling my application should run complex stability computations in the background and return the results to the user in the form of a report. I would like my application to be available on the web unless this it not feasible or realistic. The shapes to be analyzed do not have a very complicated geometry: 2D polygons. My site would look similar to this one, yet way less complex:

Can I develop a site like the above one in java?

This may seem like a trivial question, or perhaps the wrong place for posting this question, but I have no idea about website development. I would like to use java because it is free.

    Thanks in advance

Yes, that can be done in Java. Applets would have been an easy solution but they are getting phased out.
Since I know Java I would probably write a self contained application and have it down loaded and run
on the user's machine and the use JSP to interact with the server. But a better way that fits your requirement
might be using JavaScript since that runs in a web browser. Others in this forum more familiar with web based
services may have some better ideas.

Can the whole app be done in a single program without need for special code on a server?
JNLP might be a solution. I tried a test JNLP app to see what it takes. I've created a key and signed a jar file with a normal java program.
A user is required to make an entry in the Control Panel's Java access program Exception list.
See the discussion at this link: http://forums.codeguru.com/showthrea...Test-JNLP-link
If you don't understand my response, don't ignore it, ask a question.
