Default JDK will not work with my macbook running Mavericks

Thanks for all help in advance. I'm in a java class and we need to install the JDK (not JRE or an IDE) so that we can compile and run with terminal. The problem is that I have installed the JDK (jdk-8u71 for os x) and compiling still will not work. Using javac will tell me (command not found). javac -version and java - version both tell me command not understood. I have been working on this for hours and I think it should have taken minutes for this to actually work. Please help, I am beyond frustrated.

Look in the bin directory of where you installed the JDK. If you see a javac.exe there then you need to put the containing directory (full path name) in the path environment variable so that the shell knows where to find the program.

Thanks for your answer Jim. I am completely new to this so I may sound stupid. I can't find where it installed, even though I've installed it multiple times. Other forums say that the path should be /library/java/javavirtualmachine. However under library, I don't have a folder titled java. I'm at a loss because I have installed the JDK numerous times. I'm positive it was the JDK I installed and not the JRE. Do you have any suggestions?

Unfortunately I am not familiar with Macs. But normally the JDK is installed in a directory which starts with JDK (but that may not be the top level directory). Then the bin directory is directly under that. I recommend you do some web searches on these types of non-java issues (finding installed programs, executable search directories, etc) for your particular OS.

Doesn't a Mac run unix under the hood? If so, type 'find / -name javac -print' and let your Mac do the dirty work ...

    kind regards,
