Question Cannot re-install Java on Vista 64bit system. Please help!

I see this is a very technical forum and I'm just an average end user of java trying to figure out why suddenly my Vista 64bit system won't re-install the Java program.

Please direct me to the right forum, here or elsewhere...

So for some reason I uninstalled java on my Vista with the intention of re-installing the latest version. Oh, I think it was that Firefox kept telling me the old version of Java was dangerous.

Okay so I uninstalled through Programs and Features.

Then I downloaded the latest version through the Java web site. Tried to install.

When I double click on jxpiinstall.exe or jre-8u51-windows-i586.exe or jre-8u51-windows-x64.exe. Tried them all and they just sit there and do nothing when double-clicked or RUN as Administrator. NOTE: OTHER .exe programs do install the program they are meant to install, so this is clearly just a java issue.

So here's what I have done:
I tried running javara then re-starting my computer then installing java.
    Same problem.

Have looked around the net for solutions and I made sure my Windows Installer in "Services" was working, and now I've given up because mostly all I find is "uninstall all parts of Java" (Done!) and Re-install the latest version (Done!) - both 32bit and 64bit!

Please, I NEED Java on my computer and browser! Help me figure out how to fix this!
p.s. I'm not a programmer so please - if you have any possibly suggestions - make them in laymen's terms that an intermediate computer user can understand. (I'm intermediate/advanced in web site building with Wordpress and know some html and know my way around Windows but know nothing of other programs like java.)

Is your Vista updated to SP2?

Instructions for the offline installer here: What is the offline method for downloading and installing Java for a Windows computer?
Download from Download Java for Windows

I suggest using the link 'Remove Older Versions' first.

If that's what you've already done, you may have some problem with your computer. Do you have multiple antivirus/anti-adware/anti-malware programs installed?

Then I downloaded the latest version through the Java web site.
Which website is that exactly? What you describe sounds a little shady.

    I downloaded java through https://www.java.com/en/download/

I found the problem though for the life of me I don't know why this happened this way and I've never seen it before. Maybe one of you can explain it:
When I right clicked on the jxpiinstall.exe I saw the following (see jpg linked) which says "This file came from another computer and might be blocked to protect this computer." Then offered me an UNBLOCK button.
I unblocked it and installed the .exe and now all is fine!
What's up with the "blocked" .exe from java.com???

No idea, that looks like something very Vista-specific. I've never seen something like that in Windows 7 or 8.

I've never seen that in Win7 but I've heard of it being seen in Win8. Even applies to .CHM (compiled HTML help) files.

Oh, and it's in no way specific to Java.

For more information just Google that block message, "this file came from another computer and might be blocked". You'll get tons of Windows Vista security related material, and tons of frustrated people cursing Microsoft ;)

... and now that Microsoft has taken over Skype, I have had to zip up a .CHM so the recipient could copy the file to another folder to unblock it in Win8.1. Earlier Skype would offer an option to download instead of open a transferred file, but that option is gone now.
