    Question Java Web applications help

I want to start making some applications for the web with Java. I have found a tutorial but feel a bit naive and want to find out some more before I start. First of all what I want to do with java and the web is make applications with java and html and I have a raspberry pi(mini computer running linux) which I have set up Apache on and would like to host my own web apps on it. First off I like doing my java in eclipse for java SE. Now do I need java EE for web app development? I also heard of TomCat which is like Apache so I can test it on my computer instead of taking it to the server. Also how do I deploy it to the server. I would really appreciate a resource or something to help me out.

You only need Tomcat which supports exactly enough of the JEE specification to do any web application you want using any web framework you want; its also very resource friendly so should work well enough on your Pi (I hope you have a Pi 2 model).

    Start with this:

Free Online Version of Core Servlets and JavaServer Pages (Second Edition) in PDF

But be aware of that yellow box you find on that site; its an old book but it explains the basics incredibly well - and its free.

PS: you do know basic Java development don't you? If not then jumping right into web development is going to be a hellish learning curve to overcome.

What about basic web stuff such as HTML, CSS and Javascript? Do you know the theory behind HTTP?

Learning such things first can greatly help to lower the learning curve.
