Default [Help] Java gone after install

So I have a late 2012 iMac with 10.10 Yosemite, and Java 6 on it. Yesterday I installed Java 7 because I needed it for something, but the pc still says I am on Java 6. I tried uninstalling Java 6 by doing what the Java website said to do, but that didn't work either.

    Please help!

    -Luke

What's your path? You need to update it to point to the new version of Java.

What do you mean by that? I don't know anything about java. And are there any bad things about getting a new version? Like do some applications require a lower version of java?

Pointing to your new Java is more an OS issue than a Java issue. Your executable path needs to know where the binaries are (compilers and JRE).

Regarding compatibility, it is not a simple answer. Bottom line is compatibility of binaries or source in either direction is not guaranteed. Some situations are obvious and others are not. Read the following to understand the compatibility issues for Java SE 8.
