    Default Where to begin?

Hi everyone, I am new to this site :)

So I've been researching into the different options available to me work-wise in the world of software development. I absolutely LOVE the idea of automation and software development, however I have no experience in making it.

Currently I only have basic experience in HTML/CSS but I really want to go into the world of software development, and Java is something I have seen a lot of opportunities in in my area and I have read that this is one of the best coding languages to learn at the moment.

When I look at the job descriptions for Java Development I see other skills come up such as "Tomcat, JBoss, WebLogic, WebSphere, Fuse, JBPM and Apache Camel or Apache ActiveMQ". I have literally no idea what any of these are and am struggling to find a complete set of resources for exactly what I COULD aim for in the world of Software Development with each skill listed as every job description seems to list different skill sets under the title "Java Developer".

At the moment I am very lost in what I want to aim for with only a vague idea of what I want to go into.

So my question is - How did you find out exactly what you wanted to aim for and the skills involved? Is there a video or article on this subject that could help shed some light onto exactly what options are available and what skills I would have to learn for each one?

Any help is much appreciated :)

Start with the basics. No matter what you choose, you'll have to have a solid foundation, so you might as well get started on that now.

I personally recommend that beginners start in Processing, and shameless self-promotion, I've written tutorials that take you from Processing to Java: Hour Of Code - Static Void Games

Or you could ignore me and start with Oracle's Java tutorials: The Java™ Tutorials

Once you have the basics down, you'll have a better idea of what the difference is between all of the directions you could go.
