    Default Java Hotspot Install

    Hi All

I'm new to the forum and new to java. I have a Linux x86 running RHEL 6.3 and I need to install Java Hotspot as below:

    java version "1.6.0_21"
Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.6.0_21-b06)
Java HotSpot(TM) Server VM (build 17.0-b16, mixed mode)

Can anyone outline please the high level steps I should take to do so?

    Thanks in Advance

Java SE 6 is obsolete. What's your problem in using a later version?

    Thank You

I've no problem in using a later version. The problem I have is knowing what steps I need to take to install, load and activate it!
    Regards

You don't install a "Java Hotspot". You install a JRE. Hotspot is the technology used in the JVM. Java SE HotSpot at a Glance

Thank you for the tutorials and heads-up on Hotspot. I'll try working tutorials however I'm up against time wise. Its not that I need to program or use Java per se. I just need to install it on a server in order to get my application working on it.

Then grab the latest JRE from java.com: Java + You and install that. Make sure to ask the vendor of the application if it is capable of running under Java 8.

Remember to uncheck the checkbox for the Ask toolbar. :)

No PATH is needed. The installer probably created (or updated) a symbolic link /usr/bin/java that points to the /usr/java/jdk-6u21/bin/java executable (or in my case of Fedora, it points to /etc\alternatives\java, which in turn does that).

Still I wonder why you are running Java 6 though...
