    Hi,

I am just wondering why you like IntelliJ. I tested it 2 times now and the second time was even worth than the first one.

My first tests (13.0.1 I think):
    - Fresh installation, I wanted to create an Android project. Was not possible because I was only able to choose the android sdk but not an JDK. Workaround: I first created a Java project. While doing that the IDE learned about my JDK. So after creating such a project I was able to create the android application. (Ok, Support knew that bug, I even got a download link to get a newer inofficial version without that bug...)
    - On windows the application starts as 32bit exe. So when I tested Spring roo, it was started in 32bit. Spring ro downloads and caches some DLLs. So I got 32bit DLLs. When I tried Spring roo from the commandline I got some strange errors till I found out that I had to remove some DLLs from my profile so that they was downloaded again.

Ok, I tried it again in the last days. The editor seems better. I liked it. (It is more like Visual Studio with Resharper addon ... no wonder: ReSharper is also made by them!) But I created a project with 4 modules. All checked in to SVN.
At work I tried to continue my work but when I opened the project I simply ended without my modules. Instead I had a module with the same name as my project. I had to add the modules again which worked but the libraries made some problems.
So I cleaned up the libraries and added them again (They are part of the modules and are in source control!). Then I was still unable to run my unit tests: "Class not found" error. WTF. After some more research I found that the output path was set wrong. It was simply out instead of a full path. (At least after setting the full path it worked again)
Before I left work I made sure that all files are checked in. (Changed Window does not show and changed files)
At home I updated the files and wanted to continue my work. But again: The libraries part is again wrong.

Do you use other build tools only? So you do not depend on the crappy IntellJ? I really did nothing special. Even if I added something with absolute paths: The paths are the same on both systems.

Right now I would simply call IntelliJ a big crap of waste.

Maybe you have some ideas about "What to do" or "What not to do" to just not run into these problems.

Or maybe I simply have to learn, that companies who try to get new features over new features to sell upgrades mostly are crap when you simply want to have stable working systems!
(One reason why I work on debian stable.)

I feel some negative vibes :)

It's hard to say what goes wrong reading this. I use IntelliJ IDEA since version 5. It eats everything I throw at it: regular Java, JEE, Android, PHP, HTML, Javascript, GWT, Subversion.

    - I use Ant for building ears, wars and the likes. i don't rely on artifacts.
    - We use Subversion for our projects. The module files are not in Subversion, since mine are different from my collegue's. I work on Fedora 19, and he is on Win7. The paths mess things up for eachother.
    - As your Spring Roo thing, that looks like Roo is to blame.
    - To start IDEA in 64 bit, use idea64.exe

And very off-topic: if you need something to rant and rage about: Debian "Stable" sucks monkey balls. Today I found out Squeeze will not upgrade PHP > 5.3.3 and Wheeze will not upgrade PHP > 5.4. Now I have to hack sources.list to get some unoffical source in there to upgrade to PHP 5.5. I know it's PHP, but still, my inherited server runs it. Apparently Debian 6 and 7 do not need the latest PHP updates? Yeah, "stable" my ass...

Yeah, i was quite negative when I wrote that post. I wrote it after my bad experience when I was still a little bit upset...

Regarding debian: you can mix stable with testing. I installed the new version of php on my stable servers that way. And that is not really a hack. Debian takes care of all dependencies.

Ohh ... and regarding the 64bit version: i didn't see that. Must take a closer look next time (right now i only have it installed on my Linux boxes and not inside my windows vms)

I am not sure if I want to try ant with IntelliJ next. I had some other, smaller issues, too:
    - Svn checkin fails the first time but is successfull on second try (on sf.net, that didn't happen on my own svn server when using http)
    - when refactoring changes multiple files i am asked if i want to use the file version of disk or memory.

So yes: the editor is great but these flaws are not really nice.

I get that when I am renaming files. I admit that's annoying. I am still on 12 though. I'll buy 13 in a few weeks. Maybe it's resolved then. I might need to report it in their YouTrack.

I used 13.1.2 (now it just updated to 13.1.3) so you should not have to much hope that this changed.

Maybe the problems regarding the projects was simply, that the .idea directory wasn't in source control (but it was not listed in the Changed window)
==> So the problems regarding the modules this morning will have an explanation.

I added it to the source control on my other system, but the update then failed because I had unversioned files on my home system. (I just did a svn update on the commandline where I got that message!)
So it seems that these problems can be moved to a "svn integration problem". It is a shame that the svn integration is not that good (or I missed something in the usage) but at least my first judgement regarding the project management was simply wrong.

Maybe I should check if I can get in touch with jetbrains. My first ticket was handled in a good way and the company seems to be quite nice (I also have experience with their ReSharper product). So it could be a good way to get forward.
And maybe the best way is to use other build systems - ant is very mighty and I want to use Spring in the future so Maven is something that is really recommend if I understood it correctly. (But that is to much. Now I just concentrate on some more basic stuff to get that right. The 12 year old project is just a big mess and it is fun to rewrite stuff and refactor it :) )

I know the excitement when you actually improve your code by deleting 200+ lines of shitty code. :)
