Re: Java text book
Take a look at the relevant sections in The Really Big Index. Not too wordy, have lots of executable code examples.

Re: Java text book
I'd recommend the Core Java series. Currently going through it and I've got to say if your looking for a thorough book on the basics and some good libraries this is it. If this is to advanced I'd recommend Java for Everyone:
Core Java Volume I--Fundamentals (9th Edition) (Core Series): Cay S. Horstmann, Gary Cornell: 9780137081899: Amazon.com: Books
Core Java, Volume II--Advanced Features (9th Edition) (Core Series): Cay S. Horstmann, Gary Cornell: 9780137081608: Amazon.com: Books
Java For Everyone: Late Objects: Cay S. Horstmann: 9781118063316: Amazon.com: Books
