Expert advice needed from experienced gamedevelopers!

Hi!

I'm sort of new to Java, I've been going with it now for a while. and I've done quite some C# before Java (I prefer Java tho)
and now I decided i want to make games, or aleast try!

You see I'm looking for an engine that fits my profile.
I'm looking to create a few sandbox games

Overhead view like RTS games.
Freedom to do whatever you please.
You know the drill.

But what Engine should I work with that fits these kind of games?
and while I'm at it, are there any websites/videos/books that will get me going a little faster?
I mean like, this is gonna take a long ass time, and I both accept and understand that, but getting a little boost is never bad isn't it! :D

I just want to create some games I can make out of fun and upload them for free for the world to play C:
So please, help me out if you can.


any other advice is also VERY welcome!


EDIT: also need some advice on modelling, animating and textures ofcourse! D: also very very welcome!

I'm no expert in your problem and so can't help you with it, but I do urge you to edit your original post, going into advanced editing and change the heading. "I need advice" tells nothing to clue folks who *are* experts in this field to look at your post and in fact will often motivate people not to read this thread since its title is so generic. In general, the title of your post should be considered similar to that of a newspaper article heading: a brief summary of your problem, something that will attract the right person's eye.
