Java Web development Question
I am thinking of starting learning web development in java. What i want to know is if its better to focus on another language like C#,ruby or php to do web development or it is worth the time and effort to learn java, and what is the advantage to learn web development in java over these other language. Please give me your unbiased opinion.

Re: Java Web development Question
I'm not sure if there is such a thing as unbiased opinion on this. I've seen folks swear on using Java, others Python/Django, PHP, RoR, ... (oops, can't forget Groovy/Grails, .NET stuff...)
Do you have any local resources available that can help you in this endeavor as that may be the deciding factor?Last edited by Fubarable; 10-09-2011 at 12:30 AM.

Re: Java Web development Question
I am learning java right now. I am taking my second semester of formal classes. Previously I self-learned C# and ASP.Net. If you learn Java C# should be easy to pick-up. It
would be beneficial to learn both. ASP.NET and C# I would say have way more benefits generally speaking, about web development but there are some things you can only do
with Java. If you want to do Android development, you'll need Java. I looked at learning PHP and Flash. I went the way of ASP.NET, Ajax, javascript, jquery, and Silverlight
instead. There are just a ton of options. I would say what type of applications, or "experiences" you want to deliver and then choose what languages and technologies you want to learn based on that.

Re: Java Web development Question
the thing is i don't have any prior web development knowledge in any language and i wanted to learn a language that is flexible enough for most if not all web capabilities that i might need. Java is my primary language which i currently am able to develop desktop apps with, however i want to expand to web application with it but if there is a better and more easier alternative i would rather take it.

Re: Java Web development Question
Then I would feel confident in telling you to learn C# and ASP.NET. You could say that C# is just the next iteration of C after Java. So you should be able to grasp C# pretty
fast. I would suggest joing LearnVisualStudio.NET For like $65 it gives you access to videos to learn C#, the visual studio IDE, and ASP.NET. I also used the Kindle version of the Joes to Pros C#. I would also say you'll need to learn T-SQL and MS SQL server. No matter which way you go, you'll need to learn javascript and jquery. Also with C# you
can develop WinForm applications. You can create a web service to link a WinForm application over the web. It could be said that Silverlight is the Microsoft response to Flash.
The one really good aspect to learning any language or technology related to Microsoft is that is is an abundance of information and training for it.
Hope this helps!

Re: Java Web development Question
Seriously though, while sure look at ASP.NET, don't limit your views to this alone as there are many decent and possibly better frameworks out there, most with better licensing. Google can give you sites that allow for comparison of frameworks such as this link: What's the difference between Django, Ruby on Rails, Google App Engine, etc.? and this one: why-use-django-on-google-app-engine. Most technologies have forums and other discussion sites, some more active than others. I advise you take your time to research all of this.
