Default SE 7 Browser Plugin Issue

    Hello all,

I have just installed the JDK 7 x64 on a brand new computer (with no previous java installed). Java programs run fine, and everything is ok in eclipse, however the plug in is not listed in IE8 (32 and 64 bit) or in Firefox and so Java does not work within the browsers.

Going into the Java control panel, "default java for browsers" has IE checked and greyed out. Checking the Mozilla box has no effect, and upon restarting the control panel, it is deselected. "Enable next gen... " is also selected and greyed out.

I used the installer found on the oracle website here:
Java SE Development Kit 7 Downloads

I have not been able to find a solution online, and hope that someone here might know what is wrong.

EDIT: I am using Firefox 6.0
