Question What's the best way to learn Java

At the moment I am trying to learn Java from a book ("Java in Easy Steps" by Mike McGrath). This just tells you the very basics of Java.

The problem with learning from a book is that there are usually no examples given for you to code yourself (something like an assignment in a college/university course). All the learning is done through set examples in the books.

In the area where I live there is only one course but it is an open learning course which costs alot of money (70 a month for 2 years).

Does anyone know of any books or free online tuition that contains the sort of examples where I can code myself?

    The Oracle Tutorials are good.

You could also Google it! (Which you might have done, but I think the search query I used gave pretty good results)
If the above doesn't make sense to you, ignore it, but remember it - might be useful!
And if you just randomly taught yourself to program, well... you're just like me!
