Progress Bars - How do they work?

Working on developing some ideas for my final project for semesters end. One idea that I came accross was having a progress bar on a load up screen when the program starts up.

How difficult are they to implement?

Any tips, or places I should look for tips?

You're lucky, it already has been done for you, have a look at the API documentation for the JProgressBar class.
