The demand for top quality developers is oversubscribed, but donít get a false sense of confidence from this notion- recruiters are well aware of this, and so is your employer.
Keeping your skills fresh and up to date with the latest trends is imperative if you wish to be a successful developer in todayís job market. Specific requirements vary from industry to industry, but broadly speaking, these are the core skills you need to master if you want to work as a developer in some of the most prestigious firms worldwide, such as Amazon and Goldman Sachs: Java, C++, PERL, C#, J2EE, ASP.NET.

Beyond mastering your technical skills, you must also have strong soft skills. The American Management Association underscores this point perfectly in their Cracking the New Job Market: The Nine Rules for Getting Hired in Any Economy.
1. Learn to create value in whatever you do. With technology and globalization, the demand for value is at an all-time high. During these times your brand (reputation) becomes more, not less, important.
2. The value you create is not about you, but what others want from you and your ability to provide it. It works in finding employment and changing careers.
3. The market for the value you create may not be hidden so much as it is splintered. Make sure the value you create is on full display when opportunity knocks.

So the best course of action in 2013, whether you are looking for a career change, or simply for job security, is to add value to your organization. Fill in any voids that you can identify, and be creative within the description of your job. Become essential to your employer. If you are looking to change jobs, explain clearly to your prospective employer why you will be a good fit, and back up your claims with real examples that highlight your skills as a developer.

2013 is poised to be a good year! Strive to be the best you can be- others will notice. Be active, stay up to date with trends. This industry relies on innovation to make progress, and if youíre not involved, you will fall behind- itís that simple.
