My work requires struts and hibernate also. If you add Spring framework to that, it makes hibernate a lot easier. I personally am hating struts and looking for something better, less pain. I spend an inordinate amount of time on the UIs. I prefer backend coding, but alas, someone has to do the UI and if you are one person office, like I have , then I have to learn everything. I feel like I can spend 24/7 just learning stuff and still never catch up to all I need to know.

I know what you mean when you say that no matter how hard you try, you never seem to quite catch up with all the stuff that is coming out.

I'm working with Java around three and half years. Specially on J2EE. Less experience on J2ME.

Experience make a huge different actually. Day by day, involving with real world projects need to learn new things. I don't know what others think about that, but in my experience it's true.

About 3 years, more or less. I dropped myself right in the deep end writing Eclipse RCP applications for someone who writes books on OO and what-not. Not a recommended career path!

Also about 3 years. I've dabbled in it for a number of years before that, but full time, only about 3 years.

A year and 4 months since I got my free NetBeans CD and started learning the language. My first interest was in Java ME, to make some stuff that could run on my mobile phone.
Nowadays I'm more fascinated by Swing and the almost infinite variety of customization facilitated by the source being openly available. Just started to delve into generics and reflection, I'm sure there's a LOT to learn there.
Regexes are also fun!
