Default Site added to exceptions, applet still will not run

I am trying to run an application in Firefox that Java keeps blocking, but even adding the address to the exception list doesn't fix the problem. It just gives me

    Java Code:
    access denied ("java.io.FilePermission" "\E:\Programs\EngineSim\ex1.gif "read")
I am trying to use the program downloaded from here https://www.grc.nasa.gov/www/K-12/Enginesim/index.htm (with the file name and location in Java's security exceptions), and I also tried the online version here https://www.grc.nasa.gov/www/K-12/Enginesim/index.htm (which I also added to exceptions).

This is really frustrating me. It's an applet that I am very eager to use, and yet it appears that Java is getting in my way.

Can you copy and paste here what you put in the exceptions list?

I think The site should be a path to a folder not to a file. Try removing the filename

It appears to give the same problem.

The gif files should be packaged in a jar file instead of being loose on a user's disk.

Where are the .gif files? I did not find them in the zip file from the site.

There are two downloads on the page. The one near the bottom appears to be an older version (I apparently missed the top one, which works neither) which has .gif files.

The fact that it's returning an error makes me wonder if it is a problem with the applet, and not Java itself.

The one without the gif files works for me.

I got it to work. Looks like selecting 'Disable Verification' in the Advanced Tab makes it work.

Are you talking about this section of the Advanced tab:
Mixed code (sandboxed vs. trusted) security verification

I have the first one selected:
Enable - show warning (if needed)
