Question Applet on jre 1.4.2 accessing local file

It is known that signed jar do not need java.policy file when applet want to access local file.
    See the link:
How Can An Applet Read Files On The Local File System at JavaRanch

But without java.policy file. it constantly gives access exception when I try to write to files though the jar has been signed.

JRE after 1.5.0,accessing local file is allowed with no java.policy file if the jar is signed.

Is this because jre 1.4.2 must need java.policy file when access local file ? Any help will be appreciated.

Are you really expecting an answer about a runtime that is so old it is dead and buried? In stead of trying to make stuff work with it, take that huge security risk out of your application stack ASAP.
