Default I am interested in learning java

I am very interested in learning the language and I have some questions regarding my learning path

    • Is there any free resources of quality starting at bare beginner available? If so, may they be linked?
    • Which learning method is preferred? Or does it not matter?
    • Are there any video series starting from bare beginner available?
    • How long would it take to produce a decent functioning gui and simple program with basic functionality?

    Thanks for your time,
    DeRienzo, Robert

check out udemy.com with John Purcell, I use his free beginner course which is fantastic so far. I usually have his video going on and watching while typing the code and learning. I then develop my own situation where I need to write code. If you look at my String thread I started here you can see how I went from one piece of code to something completely different.

    https://www.udemy.com/java-tutorial/#/

It's free and one of the top rated courses. I'm loving it s far. I had minimal exposure to programming let alone Java prior to that course and it has helped me tremendously. It's one of those things you just have to do to learn, over and over again. I'm around lesson 17 or so and it started to get hard when arrays got introduced but so far it isn't anything unmanageable.

I prefer the written word myself. But others seem to prefer videos and such. I would also check out the Java Tutorials (see my signature). And bring your problems with code to the forum. We are here to help.

I am already on lesson 18 here and I must say it is excellent. Converting from python to java has been a breeze so far. Thank you for introducing me to this

Glad it has helped. I'm a total novice and am around the same lesson as you are now. I'm taking a much longer time since I still need to learn concepts, that and work is ramping up so I have less time. That guy is a great instructor and I am supplementing his videos with documentation from Oracle as well as small programs replicating what he did into a scenario. I'm sure my next post for help will be soon since we I just finished methods and am moving on to data retrieval from other classes.
