Exclamation losing motivation and need help

I love programming and computers but just recently I have really lost motivation to code. Its not that Im not liking it anymore but Im just not bothered or cant find anything good to make. I really want to become a software developer for a living. I feel like having the freedom to program what ever I want is a bit boring. Im not really an idea person. If you are a software developer or a person who codes for money is it still the same as programming for fun? Im a beginner java programmer (but not a beginner programmer) and I know I should be learning more java but I seriously have read about 15 chapters of head first java in like a week and I need a brake from learning. What do you guys think I should do to get more excited over java? I would like to contribute to a open source project but I have been looking around and people say beginners shouldn't because their code is worthless. I dont have any friends that are interested in computers or programming either. What should I do? I have worked on projects such as a calculator and a text editor but i think thats just dull and not very fun.

Calculators dull? You haven't tried to make them do complex number calculations or symbolic calculations then? Especially the last topic hides an entire world of programming ...

    kind regards,

    Jos

ps. and editors are indeed quite dull ;-)

You've hit the hump - you don't know enough yet to make anything complicated yet you need to make something complicated to have something interesting to do and progress. Luckily I hit that hump when I was in school and had a good friend who was way ahead of me so he could pull me through it - game development was what did it for me (but in Pascal/Assembly and later C/Assembly, not in Java).

Might I suggest you make a little switch and go do something that is related to programming but not programming itself for a change? I can advise you to study up on Ant to learn a little about how to automate build tasks. Ant is a little primitive compared to other tools such as Maven and Gradle, but it is easy enough to get your feet wet with and it actually has excellent documentation. You might get a feel for how to manage your projects in a far easier way and later on in your career have the required understanding to easily adopt the more advanced tooling I've mentioned.

Another possibility is to focus on some basic computer science like stuff. Write some binary tree code and then apply the various traversals. Parse a float or double and learn about IEEE754 encoding. Write a heap emulator. Practice using generics. Write you own hash routines backed by different data structures. Look thru the API to see whats there and then try some of the stuff out. Or just spend some time looking at the API source code. Others might find this boring but I find it all interesting.

I guess the combined point of both our posts being to find something you don't know about that greatly interests you and then dig into it.

Heck, read through the trail about sockets, realize that it looks amazingly simple and then get the grand idea to write your own chat server and client, which requires you to learn all about networking theory, streaming IO and GUI programming too:

    Stop reading. Start programming.

What are your interests outside programming? Make a program around that interest.

You might also consider making a small game. There are plenty of "game jams" that offer more restrictions (since having no restrictions is actually bad for creativity, like you said). Check out One Game a Month, or the upcoming Global Game Jam.

While a spammer bumped this topic, I was wondering how things worked out for you OP, nicocannon. What have you been up to? You stayed in programming?

    Edit: nicocannon's last activity: 12-28-2015 11:35 AM. He's probably not reading this. I'll send a PM. :)
