Default Can't even create a project in Eclipse (Oxygen) - Build Path entry is missing

    Hello everybody,

Previously I had Java 8.0 SE installed on my laptop (Windows 10) for a while. I just downloaded the Java SE 10.0 from Oracle.

I tried creating Java project in Eclipse. On the first screen (New Java Project screen) at the top, it says Build Path entry is missing.

See the attached files for screenshots showing the first screen, then a picture of each tab with folders expanded so you can see my current settings.

I have read a lot about the basics of Java so I understand the concept of classes and objects, methods and fields. What really confuses me is how to configure Eclipse and the JDK in terms of all these path settings and environment variables. For example, how do you know what to configure, how do you know what needs to be configured, etc.

Can anybody help me resolve this Build Path entry error. When I was using Java 8.0 SE in Eclipse, I don't recall having this error.

P.S. If anybody can send me links about configuring Eclipse and JDK, I would appreciate that.

Edit: After posting this I tried some other names for a new Java Project. The following values also gave me the same error:

    StockOrderExecution
    Stock
    StockOrder

After tabbing out of the Project name field, the options under JRE were not grayed out. I could make changes if I wanted to.

Then for some reason, the following project name worked:

    Test

When I typed in 'Test' as the project name, after I tabbed out of the Project name field, the options under JRE were automatically grayed out.

So I can't tell what is causing this 'Build Path entry' error.

You may want to check that the JRE and compiler version are correct. Window->Preferences->Java. And also ensure that they are in the proper location as expected by Eclipse.

I tried that, but I didn't see anything about a version number.

What did you see when you went to the installed JRE's window? BTW, Java8 - 8 is the version number. Java9 - 9 is the verison number. You jut installed java 10.

Just in case anybody would like to know, I uninstalled Java SE 8.0 and an 8.0 update. This seems to have solved the problem. Although I would still like to know how I could have fixed this w/o installing Java SE 8.0 just to develop a better understanding of all of this.
