    In this XML proprty:

    <property name="war.file" value="${dist.dir}/{appname}.war"/>

    What is:

    {appname}.war

    trying to tell us?

    This doesn't make much sense out of context. property is the element tag, and this element has two attributes, name which holds the String "war.file" and value which holds the String "${dist.dir}/{appname}.war". {appname}.war has no intrinsic meaning by itself, but may mean something in the program that uses the XML file.
