Thread: The Slogan Poll
- 06-29-2008, 09:38 AM #1
The Slogan Poll
Vote for your favorite slogan for the new logo representing our beloved Java Forums.
I suggest thinking substantially about your choice, as you can only vote once and for this poll - no further slogans will be added in an effort to further legitimize the state of the poll to reflect the community's feeling towards the slogan.
- To see what we're referring to, see this post with a few example designs.
Happy voting! :)Last edited by CaptainMorgan; 06-29-2008 at 10:01 AM.

Nice work Captain. Here comes my vote for this.
By I'm worried on one thing. Do you think that two weeks is enough for this. Members may not in touch with this new thread.
And also I believe that better to keep this thread sticky in relevant forum too.
- 06-29-2008, 09:54 AM #3
Excellent point. Which forum do you recommend? Keep something in mind though, it's my suggestion that we should try to get votes from those that have been here for at least a week or two and already have a couple posts under their belt. This is in an effort to thwart folks that show up here for one post, vote and never return again...
If we don't get a reasonable amount of votes after two weeks I'll extend the poll for another two weeks.. but I think we need a limit on this - say one month in total if the votes after two weeks are low.Vote for the new slogan to our beloved Java Forums! (closes on September 4, 2008)

First thing, we can keep sticky this thread hear in Suggestions and Feedback forum. Hope it's the best. Because I seen that normally most people take a round there too, looking some suggestions.
For the opened period of poll, I agreed with you. Really important people who really hang on with our forum time-to-time. As you said people who never return after the first post/solution not interest at all. So at the time two weeks of period is enough. You can extend it depends on the total number of post we have at the end.

Spread the word folks - tell your peers we're voting on this topic, we need more voters. Almost a week already and a very small number thus far.

Going to extend this poll an extra two weeks and hope for a minimum of 20 votes.... after that, we'll officially change the slogan.

Also ask for some more slogas man
- 07-16-2008, 03:16 AM #16
Hi linuxswan,
If I understand you correctly, adding more slogans to the list at this point will only make the poll illegitimate in that we have received voters and by adding more slogans, that leaves out those that have already voted since one vote per member is allowed. If you feel there are not enough choices, then simply vote for the slogan that comes closest. Also, restarting the poll is too time consuming, considering this topic has been in effect for almost three months, and in the minds of many members for even longer. Also note, as I did originally(I think in the other thread), if enough demand is shown in future months or years, we can always change it again at that time.
But the time has come, and that time is now. :)Last edited by CaptainMorgan; 07-16-2008 at 03:19 AM.

Yes Cap, changing the poll by adding more slogans is not a good choice. As you said anyone can select only one that exact or quite similar meaning he/she can found on given list.
But I'm worried is about total votes here we have. Do you think the time you extended is enough right now. Since we have almost 1000 active members, still total votes is not exceed at least 50. :(

patience is a virtue
I am neither patient nor fond of virtue, but here we need both. If we have 1000 active ( assuming some reasonable representation shows in every few months ) then we need to drag it out as need be. Not everyone who would wish to vote is free to sit at the keyboard all day and participate in fora. We may, and I hope so, have a good count of people who would like to vote but are really busy right now on projects.

Nick, you make a good point, similar to Eranga's, that folks are indeed busy, very true and with this I am very sympathetic - but we are also faced with the fact that this type of change can't hang in the background. It's vital to the forums, and the community - at least that's how I view it - that the slogan that they first see upon entering this great place be fair and accurate, of which it is not now. The sooner this change happens, the sooner and therefore better it serves the forums(sorry, fora may be plural, but it's so rare in contemporary English combined with the fact that I simply don't favor it :)).
In an effort to the reach very active 1000 members, maybe the owner of Java-Forums would be in favor of a newsletter of some kind, or communication of another kind that can be sent out to their private messaging inboxes(maybe email is too spam like), at least this way, if they have their message-to-email feature turned on, they will receive notification that they have a message waiting in their inboxes on the forums serving to inform them that we are currently voting and we need their participation. I'm confident this is a nice amendment to our current situation, as many other discussion forums send out newsletters of varying kinds.

one time message
Okay, no email. One time message, but we can plan for the fact that it may be same - busy anyway. So many cheap shots on The Web Portal, The One and Only ~~~~ just don't awake the soul of P.T.Barnum
