High Volume of Spam Lately On the forum
I am aware of high volume of spam on the forum lately.
The posts are made from a large range of IP address. This shows that the spammer(s) is/are professional spammers.
Unfortunately, there are useless stupid peopler like these and we need to spend time to fight with them.
The way, i am currently using to fight with them is adding "block words" to the system. When these block words are seen on the posts, the system should prevent those posts. I will add the words i added to the system below and update this list. If you have suggested words let me know by replying this thread. Note that we should select words carefully so that we dont prevent users to post egular threads/replies.

How are you treating accented characters? Blocking on any use is unhelpful as some words actually use them. Blocking on the word Ů is also unhelpful as this spam contains long string of them. A threshold for % of post consisting of non-ASCII characters would be better.
I see my post has partly answered that question.

I too am seeing a huge amount of spam, and many of them are in response to threads that I've posted in, so I get an email of the contents.
Some are in weird encodings, I assume they are in character sets that I can't see. Others are just the usual special deals on ED drugs, shoes, electronics, etc.
Its really getting tiresome.
Yep, the spam-bots have this forum tagged as an easy mark. There needs to be a way to make it more difficult for bots to sign on to this forum, a way to defeat them. Also, can't the mods delete the spam when we report it? If not, why not?

Many reports have been filed and the spam hasn't been removed, nor have the bots been blocked.Don't forget to mark threads as [SOLVED] and give reps to helpful posts.
How To Ask Questions The Smart Way
I am back to fight for spam. :) Although, i am smiling now, i really dont like those idiots (lammers).
I will look for some alternatives today and will upgrade the forum software or intall new mods.
Sorry for this trouble. I hope those spammers will not be able to touch their keyboards anymore.. ;)"The sole cause of manís unhappiness is that he does not know how to stay quietly in his room." - Blaise Pascal

Actually last few days I found there are large number of spammers on our community. And I've no choice, other than ban them. Seems to me it's still happening. Lots of members, specially Chris, helps me to find them. But it's not an easy task anymore.
Thanks again for your help. And thanks Chris for the help.
I have upgraded the forum software to the latest. Additonaly, i have improved the image verification method used in registration. I hope and think that we will not have such spam anymore for a long time. This should be a bot considering the high volume of attacks."The sole cause of manís unhappiness is that he does not know how to stay quietly in his room." - Blaise Pascal
Thanks for the upgrades. Let's hope that this holds them off.
Also, while my vote probably means little, I'd like to nominate Chris to be a mod. He seems to have all the requirements of a mod (intelligence, equanimity, desire to teach, and Java knowledge with a thirst for more) and is one of the strongest forum boosters I know of.

Of course. Chris seems to be a very active member in the forum based on what i heard.
Fubarabe, you seem to be a very active member too. If you want you can be a mod too?
Chris: If you verify that you want to be a mod, i will be happy to give you the mod rights?

Hi Java Tip, I've found something interesting on the Quick Links. The menu is changed and I cannot see some options there, like Profile details.
I don't know this happen because of the update or only related to me. But I tried several logins to the forum and each time it happens to me.

Uh... well... choke... ah... me a mod? wow... I never realized I had such positive influence on the forum...
Fubarable & Eranga: Thanks for the vote of confidence.
JavaTip: I will gladely accept the role of moderator.... this excellent forum needs more mods, so...
I would nominate Fubarable as mod also ... I'm sure he would be an excellent asset to the forum as mod, just as he is as a java developer.
Difficult? This is Mission Impossible, not Mission Difficult. Difficult should be easy.

This is probably because the forum software upgrade. This was a huge upgrade. Can you try finding them in other places? If it becomes a big problem, we can try some solution to it.
Chris and Fubarable: You wil be mods in a few minutes. Thanks for your contributions again. And please check "Forum Moderators" forum (currently hidden from normal users) when you became moderators.
