    Sounds like you want to validate a text box on an HTML form. This is a Java forum, but...

    You can use JavaScript to validate the value in the text box. In the tag, use onFocusLost="validate(this)" to execute a Javascript method called validate(), that take the text box object as a parameter.

    Also, your HTML text box seems to be generated by a JSP taglib. You may have to modify the tag library to change the HTML it generates. That part IS Java!
