Smile Beginning a Project - Join Me On My Adventure!

Hello All, I just wanted to share with you that tonight I've laid the ground work for a small (maybe not small, depends how far I get) project in which I will (hopefully!) be developing a text based rpg game. I have a bit of programming experience, and have made a super small text based game before, but only for a school course final project, which wasn't great, and had a ton of bugs. I thought I may use this post as a kinda development journal, and maybe (if you are interested of course) release different versions of the game to people to try out and see how they like it.

What I hope to have in the game:
    • Combat - similar to D&D, where random numbers determine the outcome
    • Inventory - potions, armor, the whole nine yards
    • Armour - different armor effects stats, etc
    • Weapons - different weapons effect stats
    • A Quest Line (?) - I might add it, depending on how well I can program it
    • NPC Conversation - NPCs give quests, sell items

This is just a general list of stuff I might want in the game, it all depends on how well my coding experience holds together, and how far I get.

The working title I have as of right now is "Dungeons Of Dragons". This will be changed to something more original.

Anyways, post in here if you would be interested in hearing about this sort of thing, and any advice you could give me going forward.

And if no one cares, just tell me so!

Also, I'm sorry if this is in the wrong place!

Here are a few aimed at helping you to actually finish this. Based on personal experience:

    a) create a game, not a game engine. This may not apply to you since you want to create a text based game, but this is a nice read anyway:

    b) You have to do this for yourself, not for other people. Otherwise you will be sorely disappointed by how much people do not care.
    c) You have to control your state of mind; as soon as you start to lose grip on the project frustration will set in; as soon as you get frustrated the project is basically over, you may drag it along for another month but eventually you will start over. So stay focused: finish one thing at a time. Don't jump from one part of the game to another, unless you have to.
    d) when you do start over (because for beginning game developers that is basically impossible to prevent for some reason), don't jump into the new code right away - reflect on what you did wrong and do it better the next time around
    e) Its not a project, its a fun project :)

Thanks for the advice :). I am mainly doing this for myself to see how good I am at coding and if I can handle developing a application. I am intending to take it nice and slow, and for now all I'm working on is the base of the game, which I got to a bit last night, I've gotten text to be displayed when you enter a certain word or phrase, and I have the bases of an inventory system. I hope to get a little more work done on it this afternoon, once I get off work. And of course, I'm going to keep it all fun :). If I get frustrated, I'll just take a break or something.
