    Default Ant Colony Simulator

Here's the link, check it out if you feel like it: Ant Colony Simulation

As a final project in my AI class, I developed a program that hopefully introduces non-programmers to the artificial intelligence principle of emergence in ant colony optimization.

Basically, the program models how real-life ants cooperate to find food. Even though each individual ant is pretty dumb, the colony as a whole shows intelligent behavior. Through pheromones and some very simple rules, ants work together to respond to dynamic environments (which you can change on the fly).

The program's source is available, and it might serve as a base for another programmer to implement something more game-like. This could be the beginnings of a tower defense game, or just a better version of the open environment I've started here.

I'm submitting this later today, so any feedback on stuff that isn't obvious is appreciated. Also, if anybody using a mac could do a quick "this works", I'd appreciate it. My professor uses a mac, but I don't have one to test on.

I've also posted this here and here.

Looks really nice. I remember reading Godel, Escher, Bach recently and one of the sections was all about the AI of ant colonies. I will definitely be checking out your source code in time. Impressive much like the other things on your site. Out of interest, where are you going to school? (If you don't mind saying)

Thanks! I read that book too, really interesting stuff. I'm fascinated by the idea of emergence, where simple interactions combine to form complex behaviors. Are human brains just ant colonies of simple neurons interacting? Are human bodies just ant colonies of simple cells interacting? Are we any more complicated than the sum of our parts?

I hope the code is useful to somebody, but don't be surprised if you see some spaghetti code. A lot of these features crept in over time, and I wish I had time to implement them correctly. But hey, it works!

And I don't mind at all. I'm going to George Mason University, in Virgina, United States. I'm also working full time, so I'm taking one class at a time (this is my first class) in the evenings to work towards my master's degree.

Oh nice, my brother went to George Mason. I'm going to VCU, but only just starting the computer science classes in spring.
