    Default Good GUI

I am returning to Java after an absence. What is considered the best GUI IDE nowadays? I got very comfortable with both Visual Basic 6 and dot.net and I would like to progress to Java but with a similar IDE to those.

You can start by looking at Eclipse, Netbeans, IntelliJ, and JDeveloper.

I give a quick review of these IDEs on my blog (link below).

Thanks but I should have been clearer. I am looking for an IDE which includes the ability to design graphically, like Visual Basic, in other words, placing objects on a form and altering their properties, changing the layout and so on.

You can do that with these IDEs:

    NetBeans Swing GUI Builder: https://netbeans.org/features/java/swing.html
    Eclipse WindowBuilder: WindowBuilder
IntelliJ Swing GUI Designer: IntelliJ IDEA :: GUI Designer - quick and easy creation and maintenance of both complex and simple component layouts
JDeveloper JFormDesigner: JDeveloper plug-in | JFormDesigner - Java/Swing GUI Designer

Only use the GUI designers if you know how to write Swing code by hand, and understand how it all fits together.
You might find the JavaFX Scene Builder a better fit (JavaFX was designed with more of an XML definition for screens in mind)...though that would mean learning JavaFX.

I'll put that differently: Java is not Visual Basic / .NET, don't try to program Visual Basic / .NET in Java. You'll have a miserable time.

Yes, I know. I was just pointing out to OP that these IDEs are capable of building GUIs graphically, like Visual Basic.

Well, not like Visual Basic, as VB was designed with graphical GUI builders in mind.
Swing wasn't, which makes the builders harder to use (hence my point about knowing how Swing works).

Hello, I -didn't- do it. And now we're here, in a total derailment. Winking prevents misery.

Well, you did suggest a wink; I saw you do it; it is almost as filthy and profane as an actual wink ...

    kind regards,
