    Default Java Command meaning, mindset?

    Hi,

    It's me, a 1 day old Java programmer.

    I have some questions to ask this Java community.

    1) What exactly is a string?

    2) Decipher this: Public static class (String[] args)

    3) Are these commands, constructions, and statements correct (I am going to use my rote memory to see how much I know about programming):

    Public static class (String[] args)

    {

    Rectangle box1 = new Rectangle (10, 20, 30, 40);
    Rectangle box2 = new Rectangle (20, 10, 40, 30);
    box1.draw();
    box2.draw();
    }

    {
    int pluto = 400;
    pluto = 200;

    System.out.println(pluto - 100);
    System.out.print("Total result?");

    }

    {

    double goundPit = 33.334

    System.out.print(groundPit + 30);

    }

    Everything I've learned about Java programming. Give me your comments, and suggestions. :D

    hi Matrice,
    1) What exactly is a string?
    read a java api here String (Java Platform SE 7 )

    2) Decipher this: Public static class (String[] args)
    means nothing

    3) Are these commands, constructions, and statements correct
    don't jump like this, first learn some basics, use your books, use internet, visit The Java™ Tutorials or any other learning location which is more appealing to you - google a little , after that come for clarifications and help here.

    No.
    That whole line is meaningless.
    It's completely invalid.
    Please do not ask for code as refusal often offends.

    It has no meaning because you've not spent the appropriate amount of time studying this material yet. You're taking on the attitude of "Hi I'm new, now explain everything to me". That's not how it works. See my answer to your question here:

    assignment

    You are here way too soon. Get a good book, study it. Come back in a couple of weeks when you've actually given yourself the time to learn something and experiment with it. Looking at code to try and "decipher" it is not going to work, very little people have such a beautiful mind.

    gimbal,

    You too had to grab a book and just brutally learn and cram this stuff into your head?
    What books do you reccommend? Anything for a 19 year old who is completely new to all of this.

    Yes and no: I also went to school. But most of it I crammed in my head from books yes, without anyone having to tell me to do it. You see, when I was learning all this there was no internet widely available to tempt me to outsource my own responsibilities. Yet somehow, I still managed just fine.

    Think about it: can I recommend books for novices? When was the last time I needed such a book myself? A long time ago.

    You might try Head First Java 2nd edition. Its an older book, but its often recommended.
