    Default What should I develop?

What's up everyone. I just have a simple request for advice today. I am approaching the end of my Java Tutorial book. It was 700 pages of knowledge, and I learned quite a bit. This ranges from core Java skills such as arrays, collections, ,etc to OOP concepts, GUI Programming using Netbeans, and Database programming like working with .txt files and XML.

The thing is, I'm not sure what I should really be doing after I finish this book. My main interest is to develop games, but I think that's a bit out of my league at the moment. This lead me to the decision to develop some applications before I start learning how to create games using Java. I'm just not sure what to develop, so could anyone give me some advice?

Why not just try developing a game? If you did all of the exercises in the book, then I would think you'd be ready for a simple game like Pong.

You could also create a game that looks more like an application. Start with a simple rock-paper-scissors game, or minesweeper, or a text-based adventure.

But really you should do whatever you think is the most interesting. Asking strangers on the internet what you should program is like asking us what you should eat for dinner. (You should have macaroni and cheese and baked beans, btw.)

If you want to develop games, then why not just practice doing stuff with graphics. Rotations, event handling (mouse, keyboard), etc. Also, I am not a game developer but I believe that there are specific libraries recommended for such efforts. Perhaps you should research those and try using them (those libs have been mentioned several times in this forum). Whatever experience you gain by practicing what you have learned will be beneficial when you decide to write your app. Of course, to most that sounds boring. But I enjoy investigating classes and see what they do and how to use them.

Macaroni AND baked beans? Talk about a carb-bomb, you can also just give your heart an electric shock! The cheese does balance it a little bit though. Add lots of cheese, and some ham, bacon or chorizo too.
