Default Looking for book that teaches Java with Eclipse as development environment

    Hi all,

I want to teach myself Java. Should be possible, since I have plenty of experience in other programming languages.

Since I want to use Eclipse for development, I'm looking for a book that explains both Java and Eclipse. The emphasis should be on Java teaching, and I'd like the book to teach GUI development as well.

Until now I've only found books that either teach Java (plain or with a development environment that's different from Eclipse) or that extensively treat Eclipse (but don't teach Java, at least not for beginners).

Who can recommend me a good book?

    Thanks!

There may be a book that does that but considering that there are dozens of popular IDE's and dozens of languages, I believe the permutations make writing such a book very limited. Besides, I would recommend you start out with command line development using a text editor. That way you will learn how the class files and packages all work together. The IDE's can be helpful but they do a lot of stuff for you that you might not otherwise be exposed to.

Thanks all! I've started learning Java using Notepad++ :-) .

I will be using Eclipse in some time, though. The reason is that I want to do Android programming.

Does anyone know of a good and recept Eclipse book? I've got a book by Daum (Professional Eclipse for Java developers), but the most recent edition is almost 10 years old...

Not really, Eclipse is not really a tool that can be captured in a book. Eclipse itself is only a minimal core IDE framework, it is built up out of mostly third party plugins. And in that arena, there is not one way to go; there are already at least two plugins to interact with SVN for example. However: I'm pretty sure that when you get to the subject of Android development, the book you get will likely target Eclipse to show you how to get things done.

Given your history, I'm pretty sure you can figure out the rest with your noggin' and Google as you go along. I created a little guide myself on how to setup Eclipse just to get you to the point to learn the language:

I want to learn Java: 01p. Install Eclipse and learn the language

What Jim says is certainly true, but in my experience you start with learning the basics of the language which is where an IDE can still help you a lot. Learning how to use the tools and properly packaging up an application is step 2.

Thanks. Nice blog! One reason for wanting a book about Eclipse is that even installation was, well... not easy.

Nobody at the Eclipse site told me I had to point Eclipse to the Java VM. And then nobody told me that both Eclipse and Java had to be of the same x86-architecture (64 bit in my case). It took me a few hours of Googling to find everything out.

So I thought and think... if even installation is so difficult, how easy can using it be then? The basics are very simple. If you know how to make a new project and a new class, you're good to go. I'd like some guidance on the more advanced activities, though.

Eclipse is not easy to pick up, I agree. That too is due to its third party modular nature. Believe me that modern Eclipse versions are already a hundred times better than classic versions, I remember days where I was in constant plugin conflict hell.

IntelliJ is way more slick than Eclipse (there you go SurfDude, you convinced me), but you have to pay for that one. You might try out Netbeans too; perhaps that is more to your liking as a free alternative.

I got Java for Dummies and I read the first 4 chapters and have not picked it back up. It was not that it was that bad( did have alot of those its kinda like examples), but I learned more them youtube tutorial videos than anything else.

I'm pretty sure you are not a dummy, so the book was never for you to begin with ;)
