    Default Very new to Java!

    Hello,

I'm a long term programmer (CICS, COBOL, DB2, JES, ASP.NET, and server administration) that is now about to take a class in Java at the local University.

I have my own setup with PHP, MySQL, HTML5, and Apache server (taken classes in them and used my server at home to train.)

    Ubuntu 12.04 is the system.

Now I plan on installing Java (Oracle) but I wonder... will it interfere with any of the above?

If not that would be perfect for me to do class work at home as well as at the U!

Oh, and I also plan on C++ (another class coming up in 2nd summer semester!) I hope it will work to simultaneously on the same server.

    thanks,

    Deaf

It shouldn't be a problem, just a bit annoying to keep changing your class path.

The jdk should not interfer at all. That is the good thing on unix systems: user can put their own apps in their home directory without any problems.

So I have my controlled java environment in ~/bin/java e.g. subfolder for jdk, eclipse, ....
And also symlinks in ~/bin e.g. a jdk link pointing to java/jdk<fullversionstring>/

That way I control the exact versions and updates.

Where does this unfounded fear of interference come from?

I bet you never had to deal with (high frequency) antennas and all their misery that comes with them.

I had a radio with an antenna once. Does that count?
