    How would everyone benefit from IM?

    i have no idea how to carry this step:

    -- >> the movie is added to the first empty location in the array. If no empty location is found in the array, a new bigger array is created and the elements are copied from the old array to the new array. <<--
    Save that step for much later. Get the easy parts done and tested first.
    When the other steps are done, then work on that step.

    Hi,

    when you have to do such an assignment, then you simply should go from top to down. So what is the application doing mainly?
    - Print some menu
    - Get user selection
    - Depending on the user selection something else is done.
    And all this in a loop till the application should end.

    So the main method is build quickly:
    Java Code:
    boolean shouldTerminate = false;
    while (!shouldTerminate) {
      printMenu();
      switch(getUserSelection()) {
        case 1:
           DoSomethingInCaseOf1();
           break;
        case 2:
           // ....
        case 4:
          shouldTerminate = true;
          break;
      }
    Now you can do all the methods. They should be quite easy and straight forward. Try to keep them small. Introduce more methods to avoid long methods!

    And you should also think about leaving the static context quickly. So maybe the class with the main method (e.g. MovieStoreApplication) has a run() method with the context above and the main method simply creates a new MovieStoreApplication instance and calls run(). But that is something that is not required but would lead to a cleaner application.

    From that point you can start and go forward. Printing the menu is easy. Getting the user selection might be harder, but my hint here: Make a loop like the one I introduced that asks for a user input till validUserInputReceived. (e.g. if user enteres 6, there is a mesage that tells the user that his choice was invalid.)

    Now you have the core application structure. You have to add stuff e.g. the array of movies when you need it.

    Be aware: This approach is only usefull for small solutions like your solution. When you ever plan a bigger project, this will lead you to a lot of frustration! On bigger projects you do not focus on menus and things the user want to do. Instead you focus on the business objects and all the stuff that must be possible with them. And the User Interface comes at the end. But you can ignore this right now and I will not explain it in more detail.

    With kind regards,

    Konrad

    Hi,

    maybe a few questions that will lead you to the solution regarding finding empty slots in your movies array:
    - When a field is empty: Which value will that array element have? Maybe you can check that with a small program where you create an array of elements and then print the first element (without assigning it of course).
    - If you know what an empty field value is, then you could go through the array and look for such a value.

    With kind regards,

    Konrad

    Sigh... This forum served for nothing but a waste of time. Unbelievable, if you were really here to help people, you wouldn't f***ing care where or how you would help him with solving his problem, all that matters is that you provide at least some minor assistance, which i unfortunately got none of, and probably never will. I bid u a good day, I wont be wasting my time any further here, i could have searched elsewhere and got at least a sparkle of hope of completing the damn thing in due time.

    What an offense in my eyes. So we wasted our time to help you and because you are just focused on skype and IM you simply leave again. I am really sorry that you found nobody who was writing your assignment. (I think that was your only target because all help to bring you forward was rejected. You do not want to learn. You just want to get the work done.)

    Cool reply brahh, i've got few hours to complete it, and i dont need anyone to do it for me, all i asked for was assistance in solving it, the reason to do this on IM was for PRIVACY PURPOSES, not so you could f***ing complete the whole thing for me, the least you could have done is provide some help, it doesnt matter where you provide it as long as ur helping a member of this forum, and the least i could do after im done with it, is share it with the rest of you. The course i attended didn't even provide us with 1 single obj&classes practice session, they just threw several examples at us, and we now have to tear our hair strands apart trying to figure out how to do this damn thing on our own, you have no idea how i feel about that at the moment, i spent the last 2 days trying to figure out how this stuff works, 2 whole days infront of the damn computer screen!

    Two days is not a long time. I've spent more than that many times trying to work out how something new works.

    For the love of god, the deadline is within a few hours, and u want me to keep searching for stuff on the net and try to relate and make it work on a program that we are asked to complete, and on top of that, we didn't even get 1 since practice session. As the saying goes, without practice, nothing can be achieved. They probably plan on giving us practice sessions after the assignment's deadline, very smart indeed, i know.

    Thank you Jos.

    I am just thinking what went wrong in this thread so the author thought that he gets no help. But I cannot see real reasons for that (Ok, his deleted posts does not really help in finding such issues.)

    - He seemed to be focused on Skype / IM so his professor couldn't claim that he cheated. But I saw clear arguments that this is not a valid point.
    - He didn't give us error messages. So even without his code we couldn't give him guidance about an error.
    - When we was finally able to send some information (e.g. I understood that he has problems with a simple loop to keep the program running so I tried to cover that) he simply ignored the help (and in fact started to complain that he gets no help with I saw as an offense. I would never ever complain that I get no help when people are at least trying to help. Even if the help is no real help in my eyes I would not complain about no help.)

    Just in case that someone sees a point where I (or we) could have provided a better help: I am open for suggestions. (You might think that this might lead to something that is not required. I see it like a code review. This thread made me upset and in the end left all people more or less frustrated. So if there are optimisations, then we might get a chance to have less frustration in the future. But maybe my dog and cats like it this way. I simply go to them and play with them when I am that frustrated :) )

    This thread made me upset
    Don't be. You have an excellent approach and attitude. There are just certain people that want more and want it now. I see a couple of OPs like this a month.
    But there are so many more that are willing to work with us and to whom I hope we give assistance. Those are the ones to focus on and remember.
    Flush this one like Jos has done.

    The OP also had started another (identical) thread and when I 'spoiled his fun' by posting his encrypted text, to be read for everyone (as it should) he immediately abandoned his own thread, only to start a new one and getting rude in it. I ban those cheaters, the industry deserves better than those losers.

    kind regards,
