Default Need help to reach advanced java in 6 months Please!!!!!!!!help!!!!!

Hello all i am teaching myself java for a job position that will show the rest but I need to have some knowledge of java to enter into the training program. I have bought Ivor Hortons beginning java and core java volume one and two by Cay S. Horstmann and Gary Cornell. I have not yet found a math book to get me caught up on my algebra and geometry so if you guys know of any, recommendations are greatly appreciated as I have pretty much forgotten a lot. I would like to apply for the program in 6 months with just these three books, my question is are these books helpful for going from noob to advanced java programmer in 6 months? and are they helpful for passing the certification test for java programmer with oracle? I plan to committing 4 hours m-f and 8-10 hours on sat&sun to accomplish my goal and hope this community can help a noob out thanks have a great day

I don't know how other people feel about this resource, but I know that when I was going through Java, I got a LOT out of CodingBat , especially the recursive sections when I got there. It doesn't seem to actually explain things that well, but it does provide a very simple environment to test and attempt to figure out concepts. You might want to use it!

    "advanced java in 6 months"?
I suspect your definition of advanced Java and mine might be different.
Please do not ask for code as refusal often offends.

after close to 12 years, I still don't know what advanced Java is. I know what advanced software engineering techniques are, but I don't see how a specific programming platform can differentiate between "simple" and "advanced".

The best you can do is learn what you need to learn to at least not be helpless, but to be at an "advanced" level takes experience. Lots of it.

When I started programming (close to fourty years ago) at university, I could scribble a bit of Fortran, Algol and 370 assembly language after six months. Over the years I've seen (and used) myriads of languages; I started programming using Java back in 1997 and I've never met the artificial distinction between 'advanced' and 'beginner' levels as with that language. I'd say forget it; being 'advanced' in six months can't be done; you'd be able to scribble some small programs, but that's about it ...

    kind regards,

Well i started learning java with no programming skills past 2 months and Im still learning the concepts of java. Referring to various online materials. Often googling for Standard set of problem &solutions.

Once i find a solution, Implement it myself and practice various options. (You can code a solution in n possible ways). Write a program for calculator. (It help me a lot!!)

I started with Core java (Basics) now learning J2EE(Advanced).

I would like to point out that the OP also asks for recommendations on good math books hidden deep within that original post.

We've now well established that you can't become a pro reading books - that doesn't really help the guy though. The best advice I can give to become "good enough" is: pick a project, build it, "finish it". I put that last one in quotes because a project is never really finished, it too might at best attain the status "good enough". In the process of actually building something, you'll go through the proper learning phases that you would miss if you would only read books. Programming is a large chunk of theory and research, but you don't ever really learn anything until you apply it.

The ultimate result to aim for: understanding it all, not only knowing it all.

    Hi,

my personal view on this topic is quite easy: 6 Month is a really short time. Of course you can learn a lot in that time but to be advanced in something always requires a lot of experience. That is nothing you could learn from a book. A book can teach you, how something should/could work. But if you want to do something yourself (and that is required in most jobs) simply requires more.

I just want to explain it in more detail:
    - You can learn Java but that just includes the core language (if Java means J2SE).
    - So you can extend it to also cover J2EE and what belongs to this area. (e.g. Hibernation, JPA, ....)
    - But then you simply need to solve solutions. So you need to know how to design something. Object Oriented Analysis / Object Oriented Design is important in this area. I saw a lot of books covering "Patterns" which can help but I like the generic approach. So one book I really loved was Object Thinking from Microsoft Press.
    - At this stage you will find out, that all above is not enough. You want to work in a team. You want to organize the team. You want to produce a product. So you might want to learn about Agile Methods like Scrum. Or today everyone talks about "continous delivery" or so ...
    - You think you are an expert? But now you need to manage data. So you might want to know SQL Servers. You know SQL? Great! But there are also NOSQL and such newer databases that are not (or not only) relational.
    - And of course there are a lot of small things like IDEs, Tests (not only Unit Tests), Refactoring, Clean Code, ....

And reading a book is never enough! You need practice! Without practice you cannot really master anything. You have to understand, that it is not enough to just know some technology. It is also important to have some practice. So far all technologies I used had a lot of pitfalls to step into and mastering the technology simply meant to know these and know solutions.

I understood that you want to apply for a job? If oyu are young and really interested in development then just go and do your best. Learn what you can learn. Make sure that you learn as much as possible about some technologies. Maybe you can create a project which you could use as a showcase and that uses some technologies. I think most companies want to get an employee that wants to master the technology and is willing to learn new stuff. The job you want to apply for is hopefully not a job where a company looks for a senior software engineer (Without years of practice you cannot get such a job!). So if you learn alot in your spare time (I understood it that way!), then you show that you are really willing to do the job. So just keep cool and do not be to nervous that you might have missed something or that you understood something wrong.

    With kind regards,

    Konrad
