    Default installation problem

I have upgraded my Java from version 1.6.0_65, to 1.7.0_51B13. This is on a Mac 10.7.5. The Java Control Panel shows that the update has been successful, but I do not seem to be able to use version 7 from the terminal which is still reporting version 6. I think this may be a path problem, but I cannot find the installation of version 7 anywhere on the system? Does anyone have a clue that might help me out. Many thanks.

If you can't find Java 7 anywhere on your system, are you sure you installed Java 7 and not another version of Java 6?

Define "upgrade" - was some sort of software update executed or did you install Java 7 as documented below?

The system had (has) 1.6.x installed. This came as standard with OSX 10.7. I installed/upgraded using the very site and set of instructions you cite above. The java control panel run-time environment settings say that the path is /Library/Internet plug-ins/JavaApletPlugin.plugin/Contents/Home/bin/java. I guess it's a question of either moving it or telling the rest of the OS where it is, but I an groping in the dark here as this is my first foray into java!

Why don't you just uninstall the old version of Java like they recommend? https://www.java.com/en/download/faq...erversions.xml

Got there eventually. This article gave me the clue: Uninstall or Disable Java on a Mac - The Mac Observer.
The simple upgrade on Lion only loads the web browser plugin, you have to go to a different page to get the full development kit, once I had done this everything went smoothly.
