Default How to write a program to record names and dates?

I was discussing this with some friends - both in IT. I want an app that I can use to save the name, address, item sold, subject discussed and date that I visited someone - in a job similar to a sales rep. I would like to be able to choose how to sort the info so that if I sort by date I can see who hasn't been visited for the longest and start there. If I think of someone's name then of course I want to sort by name.
One of my friends says he works with "php"[? I'm still learning these terms] and everything happens online. I would like it to be an android app so it can be done without an internet connection - things are a little 'behind' in some of the area of New Zealand :)
What would be my best approach here please?

Seeing as no one else has replied to this thread, I'll just give you what I know, and hope it helps you out.

    1. Java can be used be used to save data in a variety of ways. PHP is a separate programming language - it is not java. To my knowledge, PHP is used for online programming, like databases and websites , though if you actually wanted to store online (which I realize you said you did not) I believe you could use Java and PHP together, though I don't have any experience doing this myself.

    2. Depending on how you save your data, there are a variety of ways you can sort it. You will just have to use your knowledge of Java and get creative about how you want to sort it. There's no one way to sort data in Java, so don't be disappointed if no one gives you code to copy and paste for sorting your data. If you don't have any basic knowledge of Java, you will want to do some tutorials or something. I recommend TheNewBoston's tutorials. You can google it or look it up on youtube. They are great for beginners.

    3. Android applications can be written in Java, but you need a special api. Again, you can look on TheNewBoston's website or on youtube and he actually has some good tutorials up for Anroid app development using java as well, including videos explaining how to download and install the android api, etc. Everything you need to know for a complete beginner.

    I hope this helps.

Thanks very much for your help. I've bookmarked that site and will watch the videos later today. I've been watching a few videos on youtube that have quite an 'accent' to them :) . I'm not sure if you saw my posts two weeks ago but the short story is: I downloaded the sdk to my 5 year old macbook pro, Java was blocked on the old osx.
I updated the osx to 'Mavericks', which is needed to run Java, and ADT wouldn't work with that for some reason. I then wiped that off, installed Eclipse on its own, downloaded the software to give Eclipse an android plug-in and started the basic "Hello World" program with that. Then of course my macbook wouldn't talk to a Nexus tablet and I couldn't run software in debugging mode so I had to install an "Android File Transfer" program and found out which file to copy from Eclipse and paste in a folder on the tablet - of course that involved installing "easyinstaller" on the tablet as well to find the file and get it running! Fun and games! So basically I finally have the ability to transfer a small program I never wrote to a tablet and see it working after two weeks of playing around.
I've been busy for a week on one of my photography projects but started getting into the learning part again.
I'm finding this site very insightful, comparing classes with methods and fields to various types of bicycles along with pictures that make it sink into my mind better. I like being able to step back and see a "map" of how things work.
Thanks again for yout help :)

I know nothing about the Android API (and I would like to keep it that way, thank you ;-) but if it has an equivalent of the Swing JTable, check out if it has row and column sorters ...

    kind regards,

Android has SQLite built-in that should be useful for saving data on the tablet.

Also I've found the AIDE app for tablets to be useful for later stages of debugging where not a lot of typing needs to be done.

Is it something built in to the tablet or something I would tell the program to do?

Ok thanks. When I was disuccsing with my friends the program i wanted to write they told me I would need to design a data-base, neither of them know much about the Android platform though. This is going to be an interesting learning experience for all of us :)
