Do you know how often this question gets asked? A forum search should have been your first thing to do.

First things first: you are never going to become an "expert" through books. That takes years of working experience. The best you can do is become knowledgeable of the subject material. And for that I would either recommend 'Head First Java 2nd edition' if you like to learn through puzzles and games, or otherwise I would recommend 'Java the Complete Reference'. The latter is not really written for beginners though, but I can't really recommend any because the books I read are 10+ years old.

And finally: you don't have to ask this question really. Just go to Amazon.com and do a book search for "java", then check out the user reviews to find out what people think of the books. Such a wealth of information right at your fingertips - don't ignore it!

I don't find book recommendations very useful when I'm buying computer books. I need one that speaks to me. So I go to a bookstore, order a coffee, and sit down with a big stack of books and page through them until I find one I like.

Enjoy it while you can still do that I'd say. At least in the Netherlands bookstores are dropping like flies.
