    Default General Java Questions

    Hello, all!

I just have some brief questions about skill-set.

    1. How long did it take you before you considered yourself "good" at Java? What is good?

    2. For game developers, how long (from your initial study of Java) did it take before you could begin developing your own games?

    3. How useful is your Java programming ability to you?

I stated in my introduction that I am (practically) completely new to Java, and my end-goal is to develop games for the Android platform; however, I fully realize that one can't "hop in" to game development, and intend to start from the beginning using the book "Java: A Beginner's Guide". These questions are more to satisfy my impatient need to "get somewhere" with programming.

Thanks in advance, and I hope to hear from you all!

    Aaron

    1. I have been programming for about a year, maybe a little longer. I still don't consider myself good. I consider good to have a more-than-basic understanding of most (if not all) java capabilities.
    2. I'd say it took me almost 7 months (keep in mind that I'm self taught and didn't ever read books) to write a functional graphical game at around 1500-2000 lines.
    3. Java programming is very useful to me, I can overcome problems I have with schoolwork, and even things I think would be cool. I also find it a way to relax.

Use some guides (unlike I did). I just so happened to be conventional by luck.

Great, that's really encouraging to hear. While some may consider seven months to be a long time, looking at the (for me) bewildering amount of information in Java programming, I find that to be a manageable amount of time.

I can see how, once a good grasp is had, writing in Java could be a relaxing activity.

Thanks for the response and advice!

Once you get started, try looking at what other programmers have done, I look around the Ludum Dare website. They hold 48 hour game programming competitions. It's pretty cool to see what some people are capable of in 48 hours.

Awesome! I was actually looking for something just like that! I'm really interested to see how much can be achieved in such a short time frame.

    1. I've been using Java for about 12 years. I'm still learning something new just about every week. New technologies keep being built on top of Java.

    2. I don't know. I wrote a game client about two years ago, but I've never tried to write a complete game. I'm full of ideas, but they'll probably have to wait until I retire.

    3. It pays the bills.

If you want to get into game development faster, you might want to check out Processing, which is built on top of Java. The link in my signature to Static Void Games has a bunch of tutorials and open source games you can check out.

You might also want to check out the showcase at Java-Gaming.org - home of the largest java game developer community

kjkrum - Thanks for the response! It's good to know that it pays the bills. Ha ha So your main focus is elsewhere in Java, right? Did you study any game programming, or just learn it through an understanding of the language?

KevinWorkman - Thanks for the great advice and links. I'll check them out now!

When I originally learned to program, it wasn't a means to an end; I was a big enough geek that programming was an end in itself. My first big project that I saw through to completion was the game client I wrote a couple years ago. That, in part, landed me a job as an Android developer. Now I maintain two horrendously broken apps that I inherited from a deranged contractor, and one that I wrote myself.

How cool! That's kind of where I'm at now. I just want to do things with Java, and I'm not sure where I want it to end at. If I'm lucky (and determined), hopefully I'll be able to do something professional with it someday.

Also, Kevin, I checked out those links. Very awesome stuff! I'm following the Static Void tutorial for Processing (in conjunction with my regular reading), and it's very informative. Thanks again for the links.
