Default A bit of Mentoring Needed

I want to develop an application. I don't have experience in java or android development, or you can say development of anything fancier than small class projects in any language.

So I have started by reading tutorials. I am reading a couple of tutorials, and practising the exercises and practice programs given in the tutorials, and meanwhile going through the API reference (I am reading the very basics yet).
But I get anxiety thinking it might not be wise (or maybe a wastage of time) to go through the API of the language before i have started coding, because I obviously have time constraints as well.

I will be grateful if some experienced people can tell me if I am going in the right direction. Is that how you start with it and do it? Starting with tutorials followed by the API, and the coding and testing etc. I already have the design in my mind.
    Don't forget to smile :-)

The JDK API is huge so you don't want to go thru it all. I have found that the Oracle tutorials shown in my signature contain the basics to get started.
