    Question Which framework to use?!

    Hi everybody,

I am pretty new to Java and I am trying to develop a website with Java. A friend of my is a experienced Java developer, but that is already a couple of years ago that he has worked with a framework to create a website. In that time he used JSP for that.

If I know want to start creating a website with Java, what is the best framework to use and why?

In the beginning it will be a small website with only a couple of users. Hopefully this will change after 1 or 2 years and by then we will need loadbalancing and failover. The data for the website will be stored in a database (haven't decided yet which database I will use).

If you need more information before you can make a decission, please let me know so that I can add that information.

    Kind regards,
    Tim.

If you're new to Java, using a framework is probably overkill. Why not start smaller and just use jsp? Then when you have a better handle on everything, you can switch to something like Spring. That's what I did.

I'd say forget even about JSPs or any other type of web programming; learn, understand and love Core Java first. Otherwise you are in for quite a bit of frustration and confusion. Web programming should not be attempted until you are familiar with and understand packages and the classpath, multi-jar projects, threading/concurrency, classloaders, I/O streams and lets be honest: you're not going to get anywhere until you are at least somewhat familiar with the important classes in the standard API.

Thanks KevinWorkman and gimbal2 for the quick responses.

About even forgetting about JSPs, that is why I have asked my friend to help me. So that we can make some progress and somebody to discuss my questions with. He has got experience with JSPs, but that is a couple of years ago. He also doesn't know which framework is the standard now a days for creating websites. I have heard about Spring, but are there also other ones? For now I will start with the basic Java work and let me friend work on the JSP part.

If anybody else has got a different opinion than the replys above, I am curious to know them...

If you're interested in java based web design and not married to pure java/jsp, I'm a huge fan of Grails. It runs on the JVM, and the language you use (groovy) is java based - kind of a concise super-set of java. Might be worth you time at least looking into.

Agreed, Grails is a nice alternative option. Another option that does support the Java language is Play framework, which is also very much inspired by Ruby on Rails and is very successful at hiding most of the complexities of regular Java web development behind specialized tooling and conventions.

Thanks for the options. At this moment I have to use Java. I will try to get the certificate within a couple of months. Already followed the course programming I. At this moment I will start with JSP and when I am confident with this, I will take a look at the other options that will be there then.

Fair enough, I can respect someone making a choice with resolve. Then I highly suggest you start by reading and working through this:

And since you're in the JSP side of things, please try and learn servlets first. That will stop you from trying to put all your code into JSPs, which is one step away from Evil...(from the dawn of time).
