Default Noob can't get his head around the basics of java

    hi guys,

I've now been trying to learn java for a good few weeks following online video tutorials. But I can't even grasp the basics.

I think I need to be taught like a little child in order to understand.

What can i do? Are there any tutorials which are so basic, that a little child can understand?

I'm even in two minds if this is a language for me to learn.

Thank you for your reply PhHein,

I've tried it and yes i can create the Hello World program etc, but it's the understanding that is the issue here. Anyway, I find the Oracle tutorials quite complex, so i need very easy stuff...a guidance that even kids can follow.

Sorry, I don't know of any less complex tutorials.

I understand mate. What about if i chose a more easier language, such as visual basic to start off with and then move up to java?

There are no easier languages. The syntax is different. The complex stuff with Java is the setup stuff at the beginning, classpath, path, packaging , etc.

That is because programming is friggin' hard. Good thing too, or we'd be out of a job. I spent 3 years in school learning it and then I only partly understood it. The rest I learned by doing - I had the good fortune of wanting to do game development, which is fun. That helps to learn and remember it all a whole lot. I can imagine that if you start with dry web development it is a lot harder to absorb the knowledge.

First of all, let me thank you guys for helping me.

    I really appreciate it.

@ JavaBee - I had a look the book and I remember reading some of it a while ago. I'm going to be very honest and say I was having difficulties with it.

But I think I might have found a solution...I'm looking for a really detailed/good Java REFERENCE/CHEAT sheet. The reason for this is part of myself tends to give up as soon as

I get stuck and can't remember a certain code or word in java and partly due to the tedious task of switch, searching constantly to find out what word I was looking for.

By having a cheat sheet or several sheets at hand, I can continue trying to write a program without having to constantly seatch and would save me a lot of searching.

Perhaps in stead of creating your cheat sheet, why not create tiny snippets of code for the different language constructs and keywords so you can quickly look up how they would be used and you can copy/paste from it? If you put them in logically named source files, it should be easy enough to find the one you need and you can just open them in whatever editor you're using to learn this stuff.

Thanks....I get what your saying gimbal, but my issue is remembering the words of syntax and to paste loads of coding, would not help as it would confuse me.

So can you recommend any sheet?

i started by watching thenewboston's java tutorial videos on youtube. i dont know if it was the best easy tutorial out there but it really made it simply. i find it easier watching step by step rather than reading those oracle support pages.

I couldn't agree more. I would say that the Oracle pagea are fine for those who already have grasped the basic concepts of programming, but totally need to be taught right from the basics... The ABC of java.

First, I have seen some Youtube videos on programming. I do not believe that you can effectively learn how to program watching a video. I always prefer a good book. Although I started to teach myself Java prior to Swing, the best book I found was "Learning Java", by Niemeyer and Knudsen, O'Reilly publishing. It covered Java 1.5. I do not know if they have updated it since. Then there are others which cover collections, concurrency, and what I consider a best practices book, Effective Java by Joshua Bloch. Particpating in forums like this and reading other online articles by reputable authors (check out Java World) is very useful too.

And by all means, keep the Java API documentation handy. I certainly don't remember all of it and I refer to it often.

I was going to say thenewboston, but someone already beat me to it... Oh well, I'll endorse his recommendation. Here's his website with his java tutorials, all explained very slowly and simply without being boring:
