I believe most people use Netbeans of Eclipse to learn on these days. These are both great IDE's. I also like to use Notepad++ as a programmer text editor.

What is some good software for java where I can mess about in "runtime" and create variables etc and inspect them and such instead of having to write a load of code and compile it first.
(to test code for my methods and see the output right away etc)

Which one to use is quite personal because there is no best IDE, they each have their strengths and their flaws. You'll just have to try some out and see what you like. Plenty of people go for Netbeans and Eclipse; the benefit if you do so too is that you can find plenty of resources on them online. I also know some people who have switched to IntelliJ IDEA and seem to prefer it a whole lot; I can't comment on that, I never used it.

ok well going with this thread I have dabbed in HTML on Notepad++ but when doing java it was hard to set it up and run the coding to test it but i can actually say that switching to netbeans was actually the right move to learn Java & LWJGL with as notepad++ is great for everything else and modify already existing .jar files but netbeans for me has actually helped me out since i found some tutorials on it and i must say since i am just starting out with making 3D games I found that it is the best to use and easy to setup thanks to the tutorials i have found and so far I am actually gaining a lot of Java & LWJGL knowledge as i go to make my first game as i find that it is easier to code as you learn that way what you learn actually sticks so doing a big project first for me is a challenge worth taking for me now i know most of you out the are going to tell me "now look dont do that just start out small" but you know what i think doing my first 3D game while i learn by tutorials and videos is actually quite helpful and if you get stuck or just confused you can just refer back to the tutorial or video and to be honest i actually have NO intentions of making a 2D game ever nothing personal but they just get kind of boring after awhile and plus i want to just make a game like minecraft but with some extra added stuff into it and things that minecraft doesn't have so yeah i think that this project of mine will turn out great after having read all the tutorials and video's i have seen also on another note I am working on a Werewolf Mod for Minecraft so I am doing this to get some experience under my belt as well :)

people probably download netBeans because they see it right there while downloading the JDK. unbelieveable how lazy people are!

Why is that laziness? The reason why Sun/Oracle provides these bundle packages is to have a "ready to go" Java package to at least have something that is close to Visual Studio. Its understandable that people go for it and then think that Netbeans = Java. in time, experience and understanding will teach them otherwise.
