Default Is it imperative for Java programmers to be good at programming Graphics?

Is it imperative for Java programmers to be good at programming Graphics, or to even know how to program with Graphics for applets and such? I'm just starting to learn Java, and I like it except for anything that involves using graphics. Should I force myself to learn Graphics, or is it not that necessary? Are there plenty of jobs available in which knowing how to program with graphics isn't a requirement?

I'd say the graphics part is the minority. If you're doing graphics or UI in general, you're only doing that. The other branch is the process stuff, EE and server side programming.

Outside of stuff I've done at home I have used Graphics and Images in one teeny part of one contract. And that was a scaling task.
    But that's just me.
It all depends what you want to do.
Please do not ask for code as refusal often offends.

My opinion, is that you really don't know what you will end up using. I have found that the Graphics stuff can be hard in any language, but once you master it, it becomes just another tool in your bag of potential solutions. I didn't learn file systems objects the last time I was forced to take a VB class(Why bother, INI files are easy enough). Then some 4 years later, I am trying to relearn to program and the very thing I needed to do for my project, really could have used an FSO.

Plus, now that I am getting to really learn to program, and in a language I want, it seems like programming concepts are programming concepts, be they graphics, file IO etc...

I do not develop software for a living. But I view graphics as a presentation mechanism. But no matter what you do in Java you need to have a good handle on generics, the collections hierarchy, and concurrency. I believe that these would be core capabilities and would be used in most areas requiring Java expertise.
