    Default Java Vs. JavaScript

Hellllllo guys! So I'm taking a (college) class on Java and mobile application development next semester. I wanted to study a little about the language before I dove straight into the class. I got a free book from my school on JavaScript, and I was watching some tutorials on Java on the YouTubes. But after a couple videos I stopped and wondered, is Java and JavaScript a slang misconception? Or is it technically different languages???

So I researched a little, and saw that JavaScript was mostly used for Netscape? Which I haven't heard of since 1999? How is that relevant today? Why is there a giant textbook on it that came out a year ago?

Now I understand that Java, is specifically used for mobile applications. But I need to ask, can I read this book on JavaScript, and attend a class on Java and have it all still make sense? Or is everything so far apart that it won't? What about the syntax? Will it be the same?

And why the H-E double toothpicks does JavaScript have Java in it if they're not remotely related???

Java and JavaScript are completely different languages and are about as closely related as ham is to hamster. JavaScript was given its name to ride on the coat-tails of Java's then burgeoning popularity.

Thanks for the reply, could you elaborate? I understand they're different, but I'm not quite sure exactly how either are implemented in today's applications?

This has been discussed many many times on this and many other sites, and much also can be gleaned on Wikipedia, and so rather than rehash the same old discussion, I'll leave it to you to discover this information. Then if you have a specific question regarding what you've discovered, please bring it here.
