Email RegEx

I'm never confident with the regexes I make. I made this one for email, but I'm not 100% sure it works. I've tested it on several strings, and it seems fine. Figured I'd run it through the forum to see if anyone notices anything I did wrong with it.

That regex is woefully short of RFC821 which is the minimum you should be thinking of for a general email regex validator. If RFC821 is too general then you need to specify the detailed syntax otherwise we are just guessing as to whether your regex is valid or not.

Edit: It seems like the regular expression that you have is ASCII-centric. Aren't there valid email addresses that have foreign characters in them?

Here's the regex you need. It's fully RFC822 compliant... Although it's a Perl regex, I don't see why you shouldn't be able to adapt it to a proper Java regex if needed :D

Obviously, this is not a viable solution. If you read on the interwebs about validating emailaddresses with regexes, it's nearly impossible. Look are the top comment on stackoverflow: regex - Using a regular expression to validate an email address - Stack Overflow.

I have a fully RFC821 compliant email regex that I wrote many years ago as an exercise and used it in one client's program when he insisted on validating email addresses. A few weeks after the program was released an email address was provided by a user that did not conform to RFC821 or any of the RFCs so the regex was changed to ".*" so it accepted anything. Since I have had no complaints from the client in the last 5 years I assume this accept-anything is not causing a problem.

I have published the RFC821 regex in the Sun forums and should have been copied over to the Oracle forums after the takeover so should be available though a search.
