Question Help Please, Learning To Program In Java Through Stanford Free Online Course

    Hi all,

Well I'm new to this forum (obviously) and am hoping you guys can help me along the way while I learn to program in Java. Edit: I forgot to mention I'm learning this through Stanford's CS106A course you can find online here: http://see.stanford.edu/see/coursein...a-866adcae1111 So far I'm already stuck on 2 separate assignments that you can read here: http://see.stanford.edu/materials/ic...nt-1-karel.pdf on pages 3 and 4. Basically I've finished the first assignment on page 3 but I get a bug at the end of it everytime, it completes the job but it encounters a bug. Which is it walks into the wall and 'dies'. The code for that can be read here: [Java] Debugging - Pastebin.com. The second one works in the original world but doesn't work in a 1x8 world or 7x7 world and 'dies' at the end. Code for that can be read here: [Java] Debugging - Pastebin.com.

Anyway I've had someone helping me at times but I don't think he has the time necessary to be able to answer my every beck and call. So another person I was talking to recommended to try some form of Java forum so I'm here (as he visits Python forums) and which he doesn't know Java so he couldn't help me out there either... The original person also pointed me at the Stanford course which has been great, least convoluted course I've tried yet, first one where I've actually gotten anywhere and stuck with it. As for example I own Java A Beginner's Guide Fifth Edition which seems to be missing things, I've tried CodeCademy, Udacity's CS101 course, among other courses I've somehow forgotten at this point in time. Anyway the original guy was also helping me out but tried not to give me any of the answers and had me think the problem through, so I did and do but sometimes no matter how much thinking I still can't work it out and changing snippets of code to see if it fixes the problem. Such as at the moment the fact on certain maps (worlds) it doesn't make a checkerboard it makes columns or it walks into the wall and 'dies'.

So yes any help is appreciated and well thanks for reading this far.

    Welcome to the forums.

I'm not exactly sure what your actual question is. For better help sooner, it's best to put together an SSCCE that demonstrates where you're stuck and ask a specific technical question about the code.

Well basically I'm looking for people to help me out along the way. My first problem has been solved by another person on another forum I frequent more often. The second problem hasn't but I think it may look somewhat different now. Basically I'm looking for fixes for my code so it will work. The CheckerBoardKarel (current version in link) for example walks into a wall at the end and 'dies' which I don't want it to do and so far no matter what I try it still does it. I fixed the 7x7 and 1x8 problem though.

I'm also keen to have people add me on Steam so the problem can be talked through and fixed faster via instant messaging on Steam. Also using Collabedit seems to be a good idea as the other person did with me. So add me on Steam under Powermaniac if you have it.

Basically I'm putting together a network of support while I learn to program in Java and appreciate any help I can get from anyone and hope to have multiple people I can ask for help as that way I'm not dependant and bothering one person constantly.

That isn't really how this works. We can help answer specific technical questions, but we can't do your homework for you. Asking us to go to other sites to help you or even see your code will probably not get you very far. Instead, post an SSCCE that demonstrates the problem and ask a specific question about the code. If you're looking for something more hands-on than that, you're probably going to have to pay for it, to be honest.

Okay then. Thanks anyway I will continue trying elsewhere. As this isn't going to work by just using an SSCCE to show the problem as a lot more is involved.

I don't understand why you can't post a code sample and an error stacktrace. How can we fix errors we can't see?

Interesting, discovered a new problem. Although this is with problem 4 on page 5 (I really need to update my opening post). Basically the code works for 7x7, 9x9 odd numbered worlds that are square (always square worlds) but not even numbered worlds 6x6, 8x8 etc. So time to do some more coding. I got past the current problem with trial and error, so guess what I'm doing again.
