    Default Command prompt does not recognise java?

    Java -version has been installed successfully on my laptop (Vista, 32 bit operating system).

    I have set the PATH system variable to C:\Program Files\Java\1.7.0_09\bin;

    CLASSPATH is set to .;%JAVA_HOME%

    JAVA_HOME is set to C:\Program Files\Java\1.7.0_09

    When I type PATH in command prompt it brings up the path variable written above but when I write JAVA or JAVAC it is not recognised. I've closed the command window and opened a new one every time I change the variables.

    I'm completely confused and any help would be gratefully received. I'm a complete beginner and have read lots of info on other help sites but need answers to be in very basic step by step format!
    Thanks very much
