which Java version is the primary?
Hello, I have a couple of questions regarding Java.
On a Windows XP or Windows 7 machine where can you look to see the Java version that is the primary version? If I have 5 versions installed how can I find the one being used by each browser (IE, Chrome, FireFox)?
If I have 5 versions of Java installed and I decide to install an older version (for a particular application) since it was the last one installed does it become the primary version that all browsers use?
Thank you.

Re: which Java version is the primary?
In firefox, I go to Tools > Add ons > Extensions, and under there I can see which version of Java console that browser is using. Is that what you're looking for?

Re: which Java version is the primary?
I installed Java 6 Update 35. This was the only version on my XP machines. I then installed Java 6 Update 16. I then went to http://www.java.com/en/download/installed.jsp to check my Java version. It says I am running Update 35. So the Update 16 I installed is basically not there and useless? or do I have to manually configure each browser to use the older version?
So it seems that the latest version installed is NOT set as the primary version?Last edited by mqh7; 10-05-2012 at 09:29 PM.

Re: which Java version is the primary?
I don't really know. Running that says I'm using Java 7 instead of the Java Console listed in my firefox add-ons. I'm not really sure.

Re: which Java version is the primary?
You would have to configure the browsers to use it.
They only update the version they use if the version being installed is newer. Please do not ask for code as refusal often offends.

Re: which Java version is the primary?
Sorry, but that's not correct at all. That will show what version of Java is in the path, but that's not necessarily the version of Java being used by any particular browser, which is what this question is dealing with. Please read questions more carefully before attempting to answer them in the future.
