    Default what i need?

    hi,

    i'm preety new to java.
my goal is to run a function all time on a server, kind of a monitor, and allow to remote clients to get details about data collected by the monitor.

what i need to get that?
service, servlet or what and what technology?

    thanks.

You need to go through the Forum Rules -- particularly the third paragraph.

    Could you give more information?
    What kind of server?
What kine of API does the server have that you can use to gather the info you want.
How will clients get data from your program?
If you don't understand my response, don't ignore it, ask a question.

the server is a monitor for calls in our company (ip phones).
one operation we want to suplly is the abillity to drop a call.
to do that i thought to send the monitor task to drop a call for a specific line.
how clients will get the data from program? probably via http.

i don't know what technology i need to be able to run program on server that woks all time and can listen to requests from clients.

if i was needed to decide based on my knowledge in Java I would choose to use sockets with one thread for the monitor and thread for every requests (it'snt about larg' amount of requests in a time).

but i guess there are new technologies.

    Thanks.

Assuming you have a commercial ip phone system, then unless it has some form or public or developer api, I don't think you'll be able to just hook into it. Most systems are proprietary, and you cannot just access them.

Assuming you do have access some phone system api, then all you need is loop that runs indefinitely. A server can listen for incoming commands with a ServerSocket. From there, it can just make api calls as needed, and respond with any data it has collected. Again, this is all assuming you have access the the phone system somehow...

Alright, then making your phone control server should be trivial. Look at the server tutorial on sun's site: Writing the Server Side of a Socket (The Java™ Tutorials > Custom Networking > All About Sockets)
