    Default Different 'javac not recognized' error

    I have searched the internet far and wide and have yet to find a situation like mine.

    I have installed and re-installed and uninstalled and re-dowloaded and re-installed Java.

    Yes, I have set the path to the java file:

    Microsoft Windows XP [Version 5.1.2600]
    (C) Copyright 1985-2001 Microsoft Corp.

    C:\>path
    PATH=C:\Program Files\Java\jre7\bin;C:\WINDOWS\system32;C:\WINDOWS ;C:\WINDOWS\Sy
    stem32\Wbem;C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\90\Tools\binn\

    C:\>

    I have a valid .java file and when I change to that directory and try to compile the file, I get the "'javac' is not a recognized internal or external command."

    I am at a loss for what I am doing wrong. Everything I search seems to only suggest adding the path to the environment variables, which I have done. I have also restarted the PC and nothing seems to work. I am not using the same downloaded file when installing Java, I am actually pulling a new one, emptying temp files beforehand.

    Any idea would be greatly appreciated.

    This is a Windows XP machine.

    Pretty sure I messed up by dowloading the JRE and not the JDK. Feeling pretty stupid right about now...

    It happens to a lot of people, so you are by no means alone in doing that.
    Please do not ask for code as refusal often offends.

    Please don't provide unhelpful "answers".
    The OP has already figure out that the JRE does not come with a javac compiler.
    Your "solution" does not work, as the OP has already shown.
